“A healthy relationship with food means finding the balance between nourishing your body and indulging in the foods you love without guilt or regret. Eating mindfully and intuitively is the key to a healthy, unstressed relationship with food.”
Self-image impacts every personal & work relationship we enter. It is built upon perceptions we consciously or unconsciously carry regarding ourselves and how we believe others perceive us. These perceptions form the foundation of our sense of, or lack of, self-esteem & self-respect. If your self-confidence could use a boost, my sessions will give you real-time, self-esteem shifts that can favorably adjust your perceptions fast. Below you’ll find a sample case study on how I helped my client manage stress without turning to food for comfort.
A Case Study in Managing Stress and Developing a Healthy Relationship with Food
Background:
Sarah is a 22-year-old recent college graduate who played on a variety of sports teams throughout her educational years. She describes herself as a fitness enthusiast. After a long job search and many interviews, Sarah landed a job that is aligned with her business major and within her chosen profession. Yet, as she enters the working world as an adult, she is feeling overwhelming stress and anxiety. She came to me with hopes that a combination of coaching and hypnotherapy can help. Sarah also wanted to tackle early signs of an emerging eating disorder. The transition from college to the job market seemed to be taking a toll on her mental well-being, leading to increased stress levels and an unhealthy relationship with food. Sarah recognized the need to develop effective coping strategies, reduce stress and find a positive mindset so she could get back to maintaing a healthy lifestyle. During the initial consultation, Sarah shared her experiences, describing her overwhelming stress and concerns about her changing eating patterns. She revealed that she often turned to food as a coping mechanism, experiencing episodes of extreme fasting followed by binge eating and guilt afterwards. Sarah acknowledged the importance of addressing these issues to regain control of her life and establish a healthy foundation for her future.
During our initial sessions I told Sarah that I was very impressed that she recognized and took the big step to take charge of her wellbeing in healthy ways. Together we defined her objectives.
1. Sarah aims to develop effective stress management techniques to cope with the demands of her new job and career with an adult attitude. She recognizes the need to transition her mindset and daily activities from those of a college student and part-time worker to developing time management skills and a new perspective towards going into the office daily, being out on sales calls and working in a professional business environment.
2. Sarah desires to establish a balanced and healthy relationship with food, free from guilt, binge eating episodes and self-abusive restrictive behaviors.
3. Sarah wants to improve her self-esteem and get back to having a positive body image. She wants to learn how to embrace greater self-acceptance and self-love.
4. Sarah intends to cultivate and practice mindful eating habits. She recognizes the importance of nourishing her body with nutritious foods and developing a healthy relationship with food.
5. Sarah aims to prioritize self-care activities, such as relaxation exercises, while finding ways to stay physically active and also engaging in hobbies that promote emotional well-being.
With Sarah’s goals outlined, along with her enthusiasm to find better ways to cope and reduce stress while staying healthy and fit, we began:
– Sarah was familiar with being coached. We identified boundaries and rules that we agreed would enable her to flourish and succeed. She was assured that her success would be built within a non-judgmental environment and that honesty – particularly surrounding eating disorders – is of paramount importance.
– I began our sessions with hypnotherapy. I guided Sarah through relaxation techniques during these hypnosis sessions, including deep breathing, progressive muscle relaxation and visualization exercises. These techniques help Sarah manage stress, reduce anxiety, and promote overall well-being. Further, they set the stage for more relaxed discussions.
– Through guided discussions and hypnosis, I assisted Sarah in identifying emotional triggers that contribute to her stress and eating patterns. Sarah is learning to recognize and address these triggers in healthier ways.
– Working with Sarah, we began to confront old socialized and faulty thinking. This has helped to consciously identify and challenge negative thought patterns, self-criticism and distorted body image beliefs. Positive affirmations and empowering suggestions were then introduced via hypnosis to reframe her mindset and promote self-acceptance.
– To develop mindful eating habits and help Sarah reconnect with her body’s hunger and fullness cues, she agreed to start keeping a Food/Mood Log. Writing down what she eats – and the mood she is in – has been helpful to make urges more conscious vs. reactive responses. Visualization exercises and hypnotic suggestions were used to enhance Sarah’s awareness of food choices, promote balanced eating and establish a healthier relationship with food.
– Hypnosis has been very effective at boosting Sarah’s self-esteem and confidence. Through positive affirmations and visualization exercises – that Sarah was taught to do at home — she is cultivating a positive self-image. Sarah is developing a greater sense of self-worth that is independent of her appearance or job success.
– Together we developed a personalized, practical self-care plan that includes regular relaxation exercises; engaging in enjoyable activities; and, fostering emotional well-being in a variety of not only physical but creative ways as well. These practices are supporting Sarah’s overall mental health and resilience.
– Regular follow-up sessions are being conducted to coach Sarah’s progress, reinforce positive changes, and address any setbacks or concerns. Self-hypnosis techniques she learned during our sessions are now integrated into her daily life, ensuring her long-term success.
Through consistent commitment to our sessions as well as being dedicated to practicing self-empowering strategies, Sarah is experiencing the following outcomes:
✔️ Her stress management skills are significantly improved and this has reduced the frequency of Sarah’s anxiety and the degree of anxiety experienced.
✔️ Her relationship with food is much healthier. Sarah feels more balanced and in control of her choices. She is free from binge eating episodes and the guilt that always followed.
✔️ Enhanced self-esteem, positive body image, and self-acceptance have all been noted.
✔️ She has cultivated mindful eating habits and has started taking dance classes and joined a club volleyball league. She is not only feeling a greater connection to her body’s needs — her emotional needs are now better met because she is developing a solid friend group with common healthy interests.
✔️ Self-care practices have taken priority. Sarah has learned a variety of ways to release stress – other than food. She truly enjoys going to sleep each night listening to a reinforcing guided meditation recording that we made during one of our sessions.
