To stay as mentally sharp as possible, we need to keep our minds toned by exercising our brain cells daily. This is essential if we want to avoid mental decline.
There’s a lot of research that confirms the harder we make our brains work, the better our brains will serve us for the long haul. Not only that, it is also quite possible to regain some of the mental abilities we may have lost.
Here’s a game that’s scientifically proven to improve brain power and reaction time. Think of the year you graduated from high school. Visualize the town your school was in. Try to recall as many things as you can about your hometown. Mentally or on paper, start naming streets. Next, begin to recall everything you can from that year in “collections”—like the friends you hung out with, then the cars each friend drove. Who was who’s first girlfriend or boyfriend? Then move to the school. Who were your teachers your senior year? What subjects did you take? Do you remember the grades you got? What else can you recall? Then, sticking with that same year: Who was president of the U.S. and vice president? What was the hit movie that year? The song at the top of the charts? Who was your favorite radio DJ, movie star or band? Was there a hit TV show? Add any questions you want to add to the list and your answers. If this is easy, pick another year. Go back to sixth grade when you graduated from elementary school. Really imagine what the year was like: what you thought was cool. Think, talk, write and visualize it.
The deeper and longer you can keep this exercise going, the more it benefits your brain. By entering our own personal mental time machines, we can strengthen our brains. Try doing this with a friend, too. Start with recalling everything you both can about the year you met. See if you can do this exercise for five minutes a day. Keep building on your recollections. Then start working through every other year.
