When I’m having a good day, I want everyone to be in the same mood I’m in. Often, in day to day interactions, it bums me out when I’m feeling cheery and others around me are moping about whatever. Sometimes, it even makes me feel angry. I want everyone to be in the same mood I’m in at the exact same time, with the same amount of enthusiasm. Admittedly, I’m chagrined to point out, that such thinking is pretty selfish on my part. I’m practicing understanding that just because I’m having a good moment this does not mean that those around me are feeling the same way. They may be struggling or frustrated with something I’m completely unaware of. In fact, my energetic exuberance may be adding to their bad mood. I think accepting this is essential to maintaining any long term relationship. If you don’t adversely act on, or put up a wall to the sudden resistance you feel when another is not on your same mood elevation you maintain your happy mood. When others are ready, they’ll join your moment…which may have shifted in its mood as well because this is life.
