My mother embroidered and framed a picture that said, “Know Thyself.” It was hanging in such a place that you couldn’t leave our house without seeing it. Truthfully, it was one of those daily reminders that sometimes really pissed me off, especially since it was also my mother’s answer to me whenever I blamed someone else for whatever I wasn’t happy about in my own life. “Know Thyself” is one of those simple expressions that you really have to think about and work on understanding. Part of the reason we have to work so hard to know the person we were born as, is because we’ve spent a lifetime interpreting ourselves from the earliest age through the expressions on the faces of others who are often tired, overworked, overwhelmed and trying to do their best to cope within their own limitations. Therefore, those expressions from others weren’t and aren’t always happy, approving or embracing. Sadly this can result in misinterpretation of our God-given essence and make us believe that the answer to finding and knowing ourselves is external. This further triggers faulty thinking that other people are the problem. Now, certainly sometimes they certainly are — but most often it is our sense of self that needs to be resurrected and embraced.
We must develop a real sense of who we are…and own it. Our uniqueness, is that inner voice that nobody else has. It empowers us, heals us, finds us, corrects us, and makes it possible for us to love and respect ourselves. To find ourselves means we have to think for ourselves. We must pay attention to our intuition, not our rationalizing brains. Follow our hearts, as that is where our wisdom resides.
