It’s not surprising that as a culture we deny that everyday we are alive, we’re all getting older. Pick up a thesaurus and you’ll see that some of the synonyms for old are: ancient, decrepit, tired, fossil, broken down, depilated, enfeebled, exhausted, antiquated, absolute, archaic and geriatric.
These words don’t describe how I feel nor what I’ve heard others express about aging in this gigantic daily discussion.
I believe its the antonyms of old that more accurately describe how most of us feel. Words like new, booming, blossoming, developing, growing, original, fashionable, fresh, youthful, current, modern, and avant-garde.
For those embracing these later years of life, there’s an element of excitement, a newness and freedom that’s different than any other time during our lives. We are blossoming, growing into the selves that maybe we’ve always wanted to be and we have less of a need to censor ourselves because we’ve reached a stage in life where we’re not so worried anymore about “how we’re supposed to be.”
Instead we’ve become new. Youthful in the sense that we’re less worried about the opinions of others. We’re experiencing a freshness that allows us to express ourselves with a greater sense of freedom. Actually, we’ve become free the way youth is idolized to be — yet rarely is because the reality of youth is that it is usually a quagmire of insecurities.
