This recent surprises included heavy rain, snow, an earthquake and a solar eclipse all in a week. This doesn’t even touch on all the other news items that we witnessed along with all the other more intimate and personal events that impacted everyone’s psyches, as well.
This all amped up my philosophical side to conclude that: “Only the illusion of certainty in an uncertain world is certain.”
Still, trying to understand and accept the certainty of uncertainty doesn’t change the counter-facts that we all still seek to control as much as we can to feel safe and secure in our environments. We believe that if we assert control we can provide a sense of predictability and stability in a world that can often feel chaotic and unpredictable — further believing we are able to influence outcomes in our favor.
In a positive sense, we can challenge ourselves to exert greater control over our behaviors, as a means to achieve our goals and objectives. By controlling certain choices within our control, we may be able to increase our odds and steer outcomes in favorable directions which can certainly lead to a significant sense of accomplishment. Independence, as we seek to make our own decisions and shape our destinies, is empowering.
So, what can we do? Acknowledge that uncertainty, fear of the unknown and worrying about “what’s next” is normal, but the worrying won’t change anything. Yet by doing our best to keep our attention laser focused on the present moment — we have the certainty that we can control our choices and actions. And from this position, we fortify a foundation of self-respect which builds our self-esteem in a very concrete way.
