Sentimental Milestones: A Journey Through Memories

I started my investor relations business in 1996 — knowing little, but fortunately learned fast thanks to a tremendous group of people who I owe many thanks. 1997 was the last year Honda was going to sell its del Sol v-tech coup with a 5-speed manual transmission. My friend Ingo, a top Ford model who I met upon moving to NYC in 1985 had one and we drove around New York having many a wonderful evening as he introduced me to the underground, invite-only crowd of New York in the 1980s along with Fire Island parties. I promised myself that IF I could not merely survive my 1st year owning my IR firm — but actually thrive — I’d buy that car before they discontinued it. It was a commitment because beyond the car cost, garage space is a big monthly expense!

I still have that car. Can’t bring myself to sell it — and I’ve turned down more offers than I can count. It’s the ultimate “pimp my ride” starter kit. Only has 24,000 miles.  I smile any time I drive that fancy go-kart.

I also often wear two different earrings.  It’s not a fashion statement: It’s a historical statement that reflects an earlier milestone I had set for myself. When I did first move to NYC and took my first walk through the “It” fashion store Barneys with Ingo, who could afford it though it was way above my budget, I saw a pair of dangling sterling silver with two big yellow topaz gemstones in each. I wanted them! But I told myself I could not have them until I signed at list one significant deal — particularly since any credit I had was being used to fund what was my business at the time — a company where I was booking comedians on college tours.  About two month later, I owned the earrings. Then, about ten years ago, I lost one of them… At that point, I’d worn them for over 35 years. I decided I’d match them with a single basic gold earring I found when I was removing things from my Mother’s house after she died.

Can you relate to these stories? I’m curious. What sentimental thing might you keep that represents an important milestone to you?
