Remembering to Remember the Intention

As I contemplate a second espresso when I know this is a really bad idea, I remember that remembering intention in the moment is huge. By other examples, let’s say someone wants to lose a few pounds. The time to remember this intention is in the moment when reaching to grab that Nutella croissant — not in the moments after it’s been all swallowed up. Same goes for getting a good night’s sleep. The time to remember this is in the evening by going to bed early — not hitting the snooze button 6 times in hopes of stalling the day. Leaving the party instead of putting yourself in risky situations is another example. The list of all the intentions we might set and all the ways we forget to remember our intentions in the moment is both endless and personal to each of our respective intentions and lives.

Each of us must decide on our intentions for today. Each of us then must make the choice to commit to that intention time and time again. Nobody can do this for us. It’s up to each of us to rank the importance of our intentions and choose to reinforce those intentions with action and repetition.

Certainly we will debate ourselves at times. We’ll rationalize — “just this time” or “what difference will one make.”  The rationalizations list is even longer than most intentions lists and it can be formidable.

Yet habits are formed by repeating the commitment to our intentions over and over again. Sometimes these  commitments will annoy us. Sometimes we’ll wonder “why” we committed to the intention in the first place. But the time to question, debate and wonder about our intentions — is not in a moment of temptation. It’s in those moments when we breathe and commit to our choices and outline our goals. Each moment, do your best to remember your intentions. It’s a sure way to elevate living.
