Perceptions fascinate me. Perceptions are formed by our ability to see, hear or become aware of something through our senses and ultimately these perceptions are identified by our interpretation of that stimuli. We all hold them and they are also wholly unique to each of us. Perceptions are subjective, selective, dynamic, interpretive and fallible. Here is the breakdown of why they are worth understanding because they impact every aspect of our personal & professional lives.
• Perception is inherently subjective as it is influenced by our individual experiences, beliefs, and biases. It is a personal interpretation of the world around us.
• Our perception is selective because we tend to focus on certain aspects of our environment while ignoring or filtering out others. We prioritize and process information based on our interests, goals, and attention.
• Perception is dynamic because it can change and adapt based on new information, experiences, and shifts in our mindset. It is not a fixed or static process but rather a continuous interaction between our sensory input and cognitive processing.
• Perception is interpretive because it involves making sense of the sensory information we receive and assigning meaning to it. We actively construct our perception based on our pre-existing knowledge, expectations, and cultural context.
• Our perception is fallible because it is susceptible to various cognitive biases, illusions, and errors. We may misinterpret or misjudge sensory information, leading to inaccuracies or distortions in our perception of reality.
Ultimately it is imperative to try to understand the variety of perceptions we hold, along with those held by others with whom we interact. Our success in any relationship will often depend upon our willingness to explore perceptions deeply.
