Years ago in response to an essay I’d written, one of you wrote: “My Father taught us that ‘Your rights end when another’s begin.’” I have thought about this phrase almost every day since reading it because I always like to assess the universal truism in certain sayings.
I’ve decided that the idea that “our rights end when another’s begin” encapsulates the concept that while individuals have certain rights and freedoms, these rights must be exercised within the boundaries that respect the rights of others. In other words, our rights are not absolute; they are limited by the rights of others.
For example, we have the right to free speech, but this doesn’t mean we won’t be crossing boundaries into another’s right to disagree. Likewise, while we may have the right to own property, this doesn’t mean we have the right to use our property in a way that interferes with your neighbor’s right to enjoy their property.
The concept underlying this phrase is foundational to many legal and ethical frameworks. It emphasizes the importance of balancing individual freedoms with the well-being and rights of others within a society. It underscores the idea of mutual respect and consideration in interactions between individuals.
It’s a phrase I contemplate every time I post: Am I approaching a topic in a balanced, non-judgmental way? Do my words infringe on the rights of others? Certainly that would never be my intention Rather, never being the one interested in small talk, I do seek to start conversations that delve into the intricacies of our “selfs” in a complicated world — and of course the unique beliefs and experiences that have accrued to form those perceptions we uniquely hold.
What do you think about this phrase? Have you ever thought about it? Do you think it’s a universal truism?
