I’ve learned over the years that only those who risk attempting what might seem grandiose or ridiculous can achieve what we might have once not even considered, or if we did consider it, likely believed it to be impossible. Let me tell you a story. Starting back in the mid-90s, during the advent of the internet and what would soon become known as the dot-com era, I founded an investor relations and public relations company. As such, I’ve helped companies to identify gaps in perceptions held by investors, partners and media, and find ways to clarify those beliefs, if necessary. I had the opportunity to meet with all kinds of entrepreneurs, scientists, visionaries and others who were trying to start up all kinds of companies. More often than not, many of the ideas seemed over-the-top crazy. I have met with companies that developed so many pharmaceutical and technology products that were once ideas in a lab or on a napkin — that are now changing lives and the world within which we live.
During the next couple of days I’ll be at a conference. Meeting more of these dreamers. Many will fail, some will succeed. Some may even become household names. And as I listen to each present their ideas, just like each time I listen during a private consultation session, I’ll be hearing another share their hopes and dreams for new realities.
I will think about the challenges each will face. I will also think of the endless lessons and rewards that will come from trying. And, I’ll be reminded that for me, what makes my world turn, are those who risk articulating out-loud, firmly and clearly, exactly what they want, hope and dream about. And then, I cheer and find ways to support them each step of the way. Knowing there will be periods of two steps forward and one step back, but still, forward is the only direction I want to go. Are you coming with me?
