Here’s another old parable that I really like. It’s about a teacher and his student who was feeling angry and frustrated with life on a hot day. The teacher asked the student to put a teaspoon of salt into a small cup, swish it around and drink it. Upon being asked how it tasted, the student spit out the salt water and said, bitter and terrible. Next, the teacher asked the student to put a teaspoon of salt into a lake, swirl it around and drink a sip from the lake. The teacher asked the student how it tasted. The student smiled and commented how refreshing the water was on the hot day. The teacher asked: Do you taste the salt? The student said, No. The teacher then sat down next to the student and said: The pain of life is pure salt. Not more, nor less. The amount of pain in life remains exactly the same. However, the amount of bitterness we taste depends wholly on the container that stores our pain. So, when we are in pain, the only thing we can do is enlarge our sense of things. Don’t be a glass. Become the lake.
I like this parable because besides the fact that we are all dealing with the everyday challenges of life — we also live in a 24/7/365 news driven society. If we are focusing too much on the news, life can seem bitter. But if we step back, and focus on the aspects that make up our personal & immediate day-to-day activities and surroundings — Life likely “tastes” a lot sweeter.
