I once read that the woods would be very silent if no birds sang except those who sang the best. I think of this line often because I do love music and many of my favorite rock and roll singers — with the distinct exception of Freddie Mercury — really haven’t always had the capability to carry a tune. YET, they delivered hits and songs we love to sing to. AND their voices are iconic. PLUS, they are/were exceptional entertainers. And certainly, YES, I’m glad they decided to sing. But that said, I would not be surprised if many of the rock and roll greats did not exactly impress their elementary, middle or high school music teachers with their singing ability.
But this didn’t stop them! They awed us all, nonetheless, because they chose to channel and use the talent they did possess. Pairing that talent and energy with passion and perseverance to perform and sing.
And this reminds me of an interview I read years ago with iconic music producer Ted Templeman. He was asked why he signed the legendary rock band, Van Halen. He said he heard they were having a showcase in an LA club at 3pm. Talk about getting the crappiest time slot possible! Templeton said he showed up disguised as a drunk to listen. AND, he recalled how David Lee Roth, Alex & Eddie Van Halen and Mark Anthony came on stage to a crowd of only three people (two of whom were actually drunk) and played “as if” they were on stage at Madison Square Garden. He said he was awestruck and that he simply HAD to sign them…making the rest musical history.
So the next time you’re worried about if you can do whatever it is you want to do, let this be your reminder: Use whatever talent you possess. The woods would be very silent if no birds sang except those that sang best.
