Perception vs. Fact: The Truth About Our Experiences

Perception is the lens that turns events into meaning. It is the merger of everything our senses are recording — what we see, hear, taste, smell, and feel via touch — combined with our thoughts, beliefs, memories, expectations, fears, and emotions. This is why two people can live through the same moment and walk away with completely different stories about what happened. Perception feels real because we experience it through our own nervous system. We feel it in our body. We hear it in our internal dialogue. We respond to it as truth. But perception is not always fact. It is interpretation — ours and others. And the moment we recognize this, we gain a little more space. Space to pause. To question. To reconsider. To ask: “Is this what happened — or is this the meaning I attached to what happened?” That small pause can change everything.
