Motley Crüe Meets Erma Bombeck: Dreams and Courage

Not too many blogs will reference Motley Crüe and Erma Bombeck in the same post—but missing such an opportunity…well, that wouldn’t be @SilverDisobedience would it?!

As those of the @MTV Generation will remember, “Home Sweet Home” by @MotleyCrue topped the “Most Requested” music charts in 1985. We all sang… “You know I’m a dreamer with a heart of gold…” because that anthem triggered our emotions and resonated with youthful energy on so many levels. The song became the #1 most-requested video and held that spot for 3 months, until MTV execs stopped letting fans vote for their favorites. No doubt many of us know all the words and are still singing along.

About the same time, another Los Angeles-born legend, humorist Erma Bombeck, was writing about suburban home life. She wrote this: Some people put their dreams in a little box and say, “Yes, I’ve got dreams. Of course I’ve got dreams.” Then they put the box away, opening it once in a while to check that they are still there. These are great dreams that never come out of the box. It takes an uncommon amount of guts to put your dreams on the line, to hold them up and say, ‘How good or how bad am I?’” That’s where courage comes in.

Two extremes of LA icons giving us good advice: Pursue your dreams. Yes, they might need a little tweaking, but dreams never really have an expiration date. Pluck up your courage, along with your sense of humor and your heart of gold, and figure out how to make your dreams your realities. Today’s a good day to say: I’m on my way!
