Spirituality is typically seen as a personal journey of self-discovery, growth & connection to something greater than oneself. Once sense of spirituality may or may not be connected to a particular religion. People often speak about becoming “more” spiritual. Today, I’d like to discuss the idea of not becoming spiritually superior, but rather attaching ourselves to those ideas and actions that are spiritually superior. I’ll break this down into two concepts.
First, if we wanted be more spiritual, we’ll need to commit to becoming more self-aware. We become more self-aware my committing to developing deeper understanding of our thoughts, emotions, motivations, beliefs, values & behaviors. Being spiritually developed means cultivating a sense of kindness, understanding, and compassion and honing our ability to empathize with their experiences. Spiritual growth means we are gaining wisdom & discernment from our experiences, introspection, education & practices like meditation or mindfulness. We’re choosing to hone our ability to see beyond surface appearances and develop a deeper understanding of life’s complexities. Within this we’re doing our best to act with integrity, honesty & truth, while treating others with fairness, respect, and kindness. The goal is to do our best to navigate life’s challenges with resilience, acceptance & a sense of inner balance.
Now, to attach ourselves to what is spiritually superior, is a bit different. Attaching to spiritually superiority means we try our best to stop judging or looking down upon others. We stop looking for external validation of our growth and instead acknowledge that we can attach ourselves to the idea that we will keep trying no matter what anyone thinks or says about ourselves and our choices. Our focus is on our inner transformation, personal growth, & the embodiment of spiritual values, rather than external markers of achievement. Attaching ourselves to spiritual superiority acknowledges that we never really arrive at a fixed and permanent state that places any individual above others. It is a daily journey rather than a destination. Attaching to what is spiritually superior emphasizes the interconnectedness and unity of all beings. It involves recognizing the inherent worth and divinity in every individual, fostering harmony and promoting a sense of shared humanity.
Spiritual development in any form is highly personal. God is the way and we must each find our path. But by attaching ourselves to compassionately focus on our own growth while encouraging others to do the same, our goals unify because ultimately we’re all just trying to do the right thing.
