Lately I’ve been reading fiction books based on true crimes. While it started because I was simply looking for something different to read — it’s become an intriguing genre particularly because my podcast has been giving me the opportunity to interview some very smart people that have been deeply entrenched in shocking crimes, horrific world situations, frightening psychological depths and more — AND, they all happen to be great storytellers! The first book I had randomly picked up at a thrift shop and just finished is revealingly timeless by Sidney Sheldon. Obviously I didn’t interview Mr. Sheldon as he passed in 2007 — but during his lifetime he wrote well-known books & TV shows like: I Dream of Jeanie & Hart to Hart, as well as books including, The Other Side of Midnight and the one I just read, “Are You Afraid of the Dark” published in 2004. This book is a captivating tale about corporate experiments to control the weather — it has an afterword that cites actual experiments that have impacted the climate. It makes me think about all that likely developed between ’04 and ‘now ’24 — in the search for power and control. It is chilling & timely. I just started “Just Another Country” by John Moody, because I’ll be interviewing Mr. Moody on my podcast in a few weeks. This book brings a fact-based conclusion to three of the author’s prior non-fiction books about China’s attempts to destroy the US, deadly viruses, waves of illegal immigrants, shipments of fentanyl, the border crisis, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and emotionally accurate Chinese AI Bots with the ability to turn humans into slaves. I also read “The Case of Two in the Trunk” by Anthony Celano, a former NYPD Detective, who headed a variety of organized crime and drug trafficking investigations — before retiring and becoming a serial fiction crime writer. The fictional story is based on an actual crime where one night he was called to investigate a crime involving an elegantly dressed woman and a casually dressed woman — both dead in a car trunk. ✨
This has certainly been a new adventure in reading. It makes me wonder: “Does art imitate life or does life imitate art.” What do you think?
